Abstract: Four specimens of Plectranthias azumanus (Jordan and Richardson, 1910) (Serranidae: Anthiadinae), known from East Asia and Australia, were collected from Tobi-shima Island, northern Yamagata Prefecture, and Kagoshima Bay and the Amami Islands, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. In Japanese waters, P. azumanus has previously been recorded from Ibaraki to Miyazaki
prefectures on the Pacific coast, Akita to Nagasaki prefectures on the coasts of Sea of Japan and East China Sea, southwest coast of Kyushu, the Izu, Ogasawara, Osumi, and Ryukyu islands (except for Amami Islands), the Nishi-Shichito Ridge, the Kyushu-Palau Ridge, and the East China Sea. Thus, the present specimens represent the first records of the species from Tobi-shima Island, Kagoshima Bay, and the Amami Islands. Review of 65 Japanese
records of P. azumanus from 5 Oct. 1994 to 2 Feb. 2022 suggests that the species prefers water temperatures between 8–18℃ and inhabit depths (30–400 m) where water temperatures are suitable depending on geographic localities. |
