Definition of Term

bank
(English) An elevation of the sea floor located on a continental (or island) shelf and over which the depth of water is relatively shallow (20-200m) but sufficient for surface navigation; a shallow area consisting of shifting forms of silt, sand, mud, gravel, etc., but in this case it is only used with a qualifying word such as sandbank, gravelbank, etc. A bank may support shoals or bars on its surface which render it dangerous to navigation. banc
(French) Une élévation du sol de la mer localisé sur la pente continental (ou la pente d’une île) et sur laquelle la profondeur d'eau est relativement peu profond (20-200m) mais suffisant pour naviguer la surface; une zone peu profonde qui consiste en formes changeants de vase, sable, boue, gravier, etc., mais dans ce cas il est utilisé avec un mot modifiant seulement tel que banc de sable, banc de gravier, etc. Un banc peut supporter des bancs de sable ou des barres sur sa surface qui le rend dangereux à navigation.
