Definition of Term

apomixis
(English) In certain diploid organisms, a type of reproduction, considered to be a deviant form of the sexual process, in which meiosis, gamete formation and fertilization do not occur even though morphologically differentiated structures (e.g., spore-containing asci) are formed. Progeny produced apomictically from a given cell (the apomict) are genetically identical to that cell. For example, some apomictic strains of Saccaromyces cerevisiae form asci each containing two uninucleate diploid spores.
