Definition of Term

continental shelf
(English) The sea bottom from the shore out to a depth of 200 m; a zone adjacent to a continent or around an island, and extending from the low-water line to the depth at which there is usually a marked increase of slope to greater depth; the edge of the continent that is submerged in relatively shallow ocean water. plateau continental
(French) Le fond de la mer du rivage jusqu'une profondeur de 200 m; une zone adjacente à un continent ou autour d'une île, et qui s'étend de la ligne de la bas-eau à la profondeur à qu'il y a habituellement une augmentation d'inclinaison importante; le bord du continent qui est submergé dans l'eau de l'océan relativement peu profond.
