Distinguished by the following characteristics: no barbel on ventral midline near symphysis of lower jaw; upper jaw teeth 25-37; head depth 10.4-12.5% SL; caudal fin length 22.5-27.2% SL; length of D1 base 9.1-10.5% SL; 5-10 narrow, pale, vertical bars on body anterior to D2 origin; no large, black spots but 3 horizontal, brown-black lines basally on D2, most distinct posteriorly; D2 and anal fins connected by membrane to caudal fin (Ref. 5218).
