Differs from its congeners in Adriatic basin by the following characters: origin of anal fin below or immediate behind base of last branched dorsal ray; scales on the lateral line 47-53 + 2; anal fin with 13-14½ branched rays; 17-22 gill rakes; ventral keel exposed for at least 2/3 of distance from anus to pelvic base; pectoral not reaching pelvic base; absence of faint dark lateral stripe in life (Ref. 59043).
Inhabits lakes and lake tributaries. Forms large schools. Feeds mainly on Cladocera and copepods. Breeds in lake shores or migrates to lake tributaries to spawn in shallow riffles. Deposits eggs on sand, gravel, and rock bottoms at about 0.3 m depth (Ref. 59043).
