Short description
Identification keys | Morphology | Morphometrics
Dorsal soft rays (total): 12; Anal soft rays: 8. Onychostoma dongnaiensis can be diagnosed from other species of Onychostoma by a combination of the following characters: mouth wide (width 1.4?1.6 times in HW); 14-15 predorsal scales; body depth high (3.1?3.4 times in SL); eye diameter small (4.2?4.9 times in HL), barbels absent in adults and juveniles; dorsal fin with a strong serrated last simple ray; and dorsal-fin length high (3.8?4.5 times in SL) (Ref. 102622).
Inhabits clear water but also lives in silty water. Occurs in swift currents over bedrock, large boulders and cobble substrates covered with periphyton. Feeds on algae and animals living in the algae. Shares habitat with Mystacoleucus obtusirostris, Osteochilus vittatus, Poropuntius deauratus, Channa gachua, Yasuhikotakia morleti, and Acantopsis dialuzona. The following water conditions were recorded: Dissolved oxygen 82.7−91.4%; conductivity 12−25 μS.cm-1 ; and flow velocity 0.12−0.77 m/s (Ref. 102622).
