Indo-West Pacific: South Africa eastward through northern Australia to New Guinea, north to southern Japan. Recorded from Australia as Xanthichthys ringens (Ref. 6936).

Dorsal spines (total): 3; Dorsal soft rays (total): 27 - 30; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 25 - 27. Cheek with 3 narrow, slightly diagonal dark-brown grooves. A longitudinal groove in front of eye. No enlarged osseous scales behind gill opening. Attains 26 cm SL.
A rare species that occurs in offshore reefs, often seen well above the bottom (Ref. 9710). Also taken by drive-in nets. Oviparous (Ref. 205).
