Etymology: Dasyatis: Greek, dasys = rough, dense (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Dr Enrico Tortonése (1911–1987) was an Italian ichthyologist and specialist in echinoderms. He was a Professor at the Genoa Museum of Natural History. Capapé frequently cites Tortonése’s work on Mediterranean sharks and rays. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Exhibit ovoviparity (aplacental viviparity), with embryos feeding initially on yolk, then receiving additional nourishment from the mother by indirect absorption of uterine fluid enriched with mucus, fat or protein through specialised structures (Ref. 50449). Distinct pairing with embrace (Ref. 205).
