Dorsal soft rays (total): 10 - 11; Anal soft rays: 14 - 16. Has 21-25 predorsal scales; 7-10 long, black vertical bars on the sides, becoming more or less circular posteriorly (Ref. 27732). Sexual dimorphism in color, body shape, and fin shape obvious in specimens over about 7 cm SL (Ref. 43281).
Adults occur over gravel substrate in clear, swift, small streams up to rapidly flowing stretches of large rivers. Feed on insect larvae, especially odonatans. Rarely seen in the markets (Ref. 12693).
