Etymology: Hypsibarbus: Greek, hypsi = high + Latin, barbus = barbel (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Dr Karl Frank Lagler (1912–1985) was an American zoologist and fishery biologist whose bachelor’s degree was awarded by the University of Rochester, New York, his master’s by Cornell University (1936), and his doctorate by the University of Michigan [...] (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Ecology
Freshwater; benthopelagic; potamodromous (Ref. 51243). Tropical
Asia: endemic to the middle Mekong basin.
Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 40.0 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 30857)
Dorsal soft rays (total): 8; Anal soft rays: 5. Body very compressed; upper transverse scale count 6; fins not colored (Ref. 37768). Has 9-10 gill rakers on lower arm of first arch; 5 horizontal scale rows between lateral line and mid-dorsal scale row at dorsal-fin origin (Ref. 12693).
Occurs in large rivers in the dry season and moves to medium-sized rivers in the wet season. Found at midwater to bottom depths in clear water. May move into flooded forest habitats immediately adjacent to rivers, but does not occur over fine-grained sediments, preferring rocks instead. Not known to thrive in impoundments. Feeds on zooplankton, worms and algae. Marketed fresh (Ref. 12693).
