Etymology: Brycon: Greek, ebrykon, brykomai = to bite, to gnaw (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: W Judson Coxey of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia was an entomologist. He made at least three expeditions to Ecuador and obtained the holotype. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Issue
The type locality given by Fowler (1943) is not in accordance with the original label of the holotype (M.H. Sabaj, pers.comm.) or the information given by Brown (1941: 834) on the position of the Hacienda Mascota (see also Böhlke, 1958: 24-25). Type locality should be ammended to "Ecuador, Napo-Paztaza, Hacienda Mascota, río Topo, a tributary of río Paztaza, 1°25’S, 78°11’W."
