Etymology: Sedercypris: Endemic to and named for the Sederberg (Cedarberg), Western Cape, South Africa, a Cape Fold mountain range in which rise streams and rivers tributary to the Olifants River system; the Afrikaans spelling of Sederberg is adopted for the name to avoid the possible confusion with the genus Cheilobarbus when the genus name is abbreviated to an initial in text.

Africa: Twee River and its two source tributaries, the Middledeur and Suurvlei Rivers, South Africa (Ref 2801, 119402). Also recorded from the Olifants River, southwestern Cape, South Africa (Ref. 27553).

Inhabits pools and deeper flowing stretches, forming schools of similar sized individuals. Juveniles sometimes in mixed schools with the Cape galaxias. Feeds on aquatic and other insects from surface and midwater. Breeds during summer, males congregating over bottom in flowing water. Threatened by water extraction, agricultural pollution and introduced fishes (Ref. 7248).
