Etymology: Garra: Name based on a vernacular Indian name (Hamilton, 1822:343, Ref. 1813); a fish living in mud (Ref. 128817); nigricollis: nigricollis, an adjective with alternative endings -e and -is, with reference to the dark stripe outlining the posterior margin of the head.

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 8; Vertebrae: 27 - 29. A moderately large species of Garra with smoothly rounded snout, rostral lobes present, proboscis absent, tubercles on anterior aspect of snout, scaled predorsal region, chest and abdomen, two pairs of barbels, lateral line scales 33, circumpeduncular scale rows 16. Distinguished from other Garra species by a black band across the posterior margin of the head, between left and right side pectoral fin bases.
This fish could be potential aquarium species (Fang, 2004, pers. comm.).
