Etymology: Betta: Malay/Javanese origin. Bleeker (1850, 1858) indicates Ikan Wadder Bettah as the local name of Betta trifasciata Bleeker, 1849 (now Betta picta, Valenciennes, 1846) in the Ambarawa Javanese dialect. Dorsal spines (total): 0 - 1; Dorsal soft rays (total): 8 - 9; Anal spines: 1 - 2; Anal soft rays: 30 - 32. Presence of an orange patch in front of eye continuous to upper jaw when live (pale yellow to white when preserved, character shared with Betta patoti). Large males almost totally jet black or dark brown when preserved. Anal fin with 32-33 rays. Dorsal fin with 8-9 rays. Lateral line with 34 1/2-35 scales. Predorsal scales 25-27. Predorsal length 67.8-69.5% SL (Ref. 57022).
