Etymology: Bellingshausenia: Named for its type locality, Bellingshausen Sea; olasoi: Named for Dr. Ignacio Olaso.
Eponymy: Dr Ignacio Olaso is a Researcher who was (2002–2003) Principle Investigator at the Department of Fishery of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO). He was described by the author as an “…expert in feeding ecology of fish”. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: branchiostegal rays 7; scapular foramen open; narrow cranium; smooth ceratohyal-epihyal articulation; well developed palatal arch; no supratemporal commissure and occipital pores; reduced intercalar, displaced backward; smooth ceratohyal-epihyal juncture, well-developed palatal arch and parasphenoid wing reaching mid-height of the trigeminofacialis foramen; presence of scales, lateral line, pelvic fins, pseudobranch, pyloric caeca, vomerine and palatine teeth (Ref. 81218).
