Can be diagnosed from its congeners in Europe by the following combination of characters: caudal fin slightly emarginate; dorsal fin origin above or slightly in front of pelvic fin origin; caudal peduncle depth 1.1-1.6 (usually 1.3-1.4) times in its length, 1.2-1.5 times in body depth; back between nape and dorsal usually with 2-4 irregular dark blotches (Ref. 59043).
