Etymology: Glyptothorax: Greek, glyptes = carver + Greek, thorax = breast (Ref. 45335); jayarami: Named in memory of K.C. Jayaram, who made a substantial contribution to Indian ichthyology.
Eponymy: Dr Kottore Chidambaram Jayaram (1926–<2012) was Joint Director, Zoological Survey of India, and according to Barman’s etymology “…one of the prominent workers of the fishes of India of the present decade”. [...] (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Dorsal spines (total): 1; Dorsal soft rays (total): 6; Anal soft rays: 12. Distinguished from other species of the genus Glyptothorax by the having the following characters: thoracic adhesive apparatus elongate, ovoid with an oval central depression, the apparatus not reaching the gular region; base of the caudal fin with two blackish-brown blotches behind the hypural plate; occipital process not in contact with the anterior nuchal-plate element; a long dorsal spine (17.9-19.5 % SL); ventral surfaces of simple and adjacent branched rays of the pectoral and pelvic fins with well developed plicae, and first branchial arch with eight to nine gill rakers (Ref. 90059).
