This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters:
circumpeduncular scales 20 or 21; total gill rakers on first branchial arch 23-29; cheek-scales rows 5 or 6; color of live specimens, reddish with a broad, conspicuous, white stripe from post-orbital region to the caudal-fin base and a white abdomen (Ref. 95046).
Inhabits the deeper portion of coastal reefs, usually below 30 m, and is often observed hovering at a short distance above rocks, sand or rubble (Ref. 95046).
