Etymology: Cercamia: Greek, kerkos = tail + Greek, amia = a kind of fish (Ref. 45335); spio: Name after Spio ( latinized from Greek 'speio'), a mythical sea nymph, daughter of Nereus and Doris, the Nereid of sea caves; a feminine noun in apposition.
Eponymy: Spio was a Nereid (sea nymph) in Greek mythology, the daughter of Nereus and Doris. Her name means ‘the dweller in caves’, and this species is usually seen in the vicinity of underwater caves. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

This species was observed at night, usually in the vicinity of a cave. A single individual at Dahab was observed solitary, although a large group of specimens was collected from the cave in Obhur, Jeddah suggesting that the species living in small groups in crevices (Ref. 125402).
