Etymology: Garra: Name based on a vernacular Indian name (Hamilton, 1822:343, Ref. 1813); a fish living in mud (Ref. 128817).
Eponymy: Dr Ethelwynn Trewavas (1900–1993). (See Trewavas, also see ET). According to the etymology for the goby-like cichlid she was, at the time: “…in her eighty-second year and still studying Cichlidae from all parts of Africa including Cameroon.” (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Wervels: 27 - 28. Diagnosis: Garra ethelwynnae is a Garra species with smooth snout, two pairs of barbels and the back, chest and belly naked (Ref. 96444). There are 29 to 30 scales on the lateral line (Ref. 58532). The vent is situated very near the origin of the anal fin (Ref. 96444).
