Etymology: Natalichthys: From the South African Museum, where the fish was found (1980) (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: SAM is an acronym for the South African Museum (Cape Town), whose ichthyologists (P. A. Hulley and E. Louw) have, according to the author, always been “most co-operative and good company.” (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Known only from 2 type specimens collected at a depth of 44 m from a stony bottom (Ref. 531). Minimum depth from Ref. 58018.
