Etymology: Mormyrops: Greek, mormyros = a fish (Sparus sp) + Greek, ops = appearance (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: ‘Monsieur Oudot’ was honoured because he obtained the type and several other ‘rare and interesting species’ while shopping in Bamako, Mali, on the Niger River. We have found no further biographical details. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

背面の脊椎 (合計) : 0; 背鰭 (合計) : 35; 肛門の骨: 0; 臀鰭: 45. More or less massive body than M. caballus. Narrow head (length/interorbital space ratio 10 to 1), snout similar to M. caballus. Uniformly dark with neck and stomach much clearer. With depression in the middle between gills and eyes. Eyes laterally situated. Anal fin origin before dorsal fin origin.
Affinities: M. caballus (Ref. 2915).
