Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Écologie
; eau douce benthopélagique. Tropical
Africa: present in Bafing River in the upper Senegal basin and known from the upper Niger in Guinea (Ref. 2940, 81282).
Taille / Poids / Âge
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 16.0 cm SL mâle / non sexé; (Ref. 2940)
Rayons mous dorsaux (Total) : 13; Rayons mous anaux: 8. Diagnosis: last simple dorsal ray ossified and as long as head in largest individuals, ossified at base, ossified portion shorter than head (60-85% of head length); lips poorly developed, without mental lobe; 9 dorsal fin branched rays; scale formula 3.5-4.5/23-26/4.5; 2 scales between lateral line and pelvic-fin base; 12 scales around caudal peduncle; 1-3/10-11 gill rakers on first gill arch (Ref. 2940, 81282).
Maximum TL was recorded at 20.5 cm (Ref. 2801). Affinities: sympatric with B. bynni occidentalis in Bafing and Upper Niger where they are easily distinguished by the # of scales or absence of the chin lobe. Compared to B. sacratus, B. petitjeani has less scales above the lateral line and a bit longer last simple dorsal-fin ray.
