Etymology: Pterocryptis: Greek, pteron = wing, fin + Greek, kryptos = hidden (Ref. 45335); verecunda: From the Latin verecundus meaning shy, in reference to the gnital papilla of this species, which is partly concealed by the anus. The name is used as an adjective.
