Etymology: Sashatherina: Named after the first author's son Sasha, who has assisted his father frequently on collecting trips without any official acknowledgement so far of his being so helpfulgigantea: Named 'giganteus' to refer to the unusual size of this species as most Old World Atherinidae rarely exceed 10 cm SL.
Eponymy: Sasha Ivantsoff is the senior author’s son, “…who has assisted his father frequently on collecting trips”. His name is coupled with Atherina, a related genus within the silverside family (Atherinidae). (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

The species in this genus possess very numerous small scales with a maximum midlateral scale count of 60 and up to 17 rows of transverse scales; all scales crenulated; lower jaw very pronounced, protruding beyond the anterior border of the premaxilla; eye quite small (Ref. 86256).
