Scorpiodoras liophysus is distinguished from its congeners S. calderonensis and S. heckelii by having a simple, cordiform, gas bladder (vs. gas bladder having a secondary bladder) and midlateral scute depth 61-72% of body depth (vs. 33-59%). It also differs from S.
heckelii by having relatively small eye, diameter 58-777% of interorbital width (vs. relatively large eye, diameter 91- 129% of interorbital width) (Rfe. 86601).
